London Thunder, at their interim facilities on site

New Sports

Sports provision at New Bermondsey is an integral ingredient of place making. This area is already well known for its rich history of sports such as football, boxing and speedway motorcycle racing.

Renewal provides rent free warehouse space for grassroot community sports on the development site in The Thunderdome, at Stockholm Road SE16, for two local clubs, the London Thunder Basketball Club and the Fusion Table Tennis Club. Both clubs were established in the south of Lewisham but were looking to expand their offering – they were both based at schools but were limited by the school timetables. The Thunderdome was officially opened in 2014 and both clubs have exponentially grown their membership and are now both recognised as leading community sport clubs in the country.

The sports will be delivered through the New Bermondsey Sports Foundation, a charitable organisation set up to raise funds for the the building of Energize and the running of club-based sports for the benefit of the local community.

The design of Energize has incorporated the needs of these community clubs as well as other sports and activities:
